Timbers Stepping Up Sustainability Efforts at Jeld-Wen Field

With the Portland Timbers having claimed the top seed in the Western Conference for the2013 MLS playoffs, they will have even more opportunities to spotlight the ongoing sustainability efforts at Jeld-Wen Field. Already having earned LEED Silver status after the 2011 renovations to the stadium, the Timbers are now looking for ways to further reduce the environmental impacts of hosting Timbers matches.The team has stated a goal of increasing its landfill waste diversion to 90 percent of all wastes generated at the facility; Jeld-Wen Field’s current diversion rate is at 80 percent. To achieve this goal, the team and stadium operators have looked for ways to increase the amount of compostable materials used in concessions. This effort will expand upon current recycling and composting operations, and complements the team’s other greening initiatives such as the installation of energy-efficient lighting and low-flow fixtures throughout the stadium.“Sustainability’s always been important to the organization. It’s important to our supporters and to our partners. It’s something that’s part of our ethos.
