The Pittsburgh Penguins Join the Green Sports Alliance to Further Advance Sustainability Action at PPG Paints Arena
April 20, 2021: Portland, OR – The Pittsburgh Penguins and PPG Paints Arena have joined the Green Sports Alliance, an environmentally and socially responsible focused nonprofit organization that convenes stakeholders from around the sporting world, as its most recent member.“The Penguins are excited to partner with the Green Sports Alliance to further promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live, work and play,” said David Morehouse, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Penguins. “In 2010, PPG Paints Arena became the first sports facility in North America to be LEED Gold Certified with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification program, and we continue to maintain our commitment to being environmentally responsible as an organization.”The Pittsburgh Penguins will collaborate with other Green Sports Alliance members which include professional sports leagues, teams, venues, universities, and corporate partners to support, expand, and promote their sustainability practices. Through the leadership of PPG Paints Arena and the Pittsburgh Penguins, they can develop sustainability programs and engage with the greater Pittsburgh stakeholders to expand the collective impact to the community.“Over the past decade, we have positioned the sports greening movement for positive environmental and social change on the planet,” said Roger McClendon, Executive Director of the Green Sports Alliance. “Sport has the power to bring the community to amplify environmental and social causes and activate our passionate fan base to support positive action.
