The Seattle Mariners and BASF have a unique partnership that engages fans in Safeco Field’s Zero Waste goal. The season-long awareness program known as Sustainable Saturdays highlights the practices that have made the Mariners one of the greenest organizations in sports and inspires fans to reduce their own impact on the environment. During select Saturday home games, fans take the BASF Trivia Challenge and answer questions about the Mariners sustainability practices for a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0 and a year of unlimited data from T-Mobile.

Fans can look for clues to the trivia game at the 16 BASF-branded Zero Waste Stations throughout the ballpark. Zero Waste Stations have containers for plastics and compostable, and are the only places where fans can find landfill containers. Because nearly everything now available for food and beverage service at Safeco Field is either recyclable or compostable, the Mariners have increased their recycling rate from 12% in 2005 to 91% in 2013. Fans are encouraged to take their green practices home with them with the giveaway of 10,000 countertop compostable containers, courtesy of BASF and Seattle Public Utilities.
