Sacramento Kings Partner with SPI Solar

Last week the Sacramento Kings announced a Legacy Partnership agreement with vertically integrated photovoltaic developer SPI Solar, which will serve as the official energy partner for the Kings’ new arena that broke ground last October. As a partner of the Kings, SPI Solar will install sustainable photovoltaic solar systems on the roof of the Entertainment and Sports Center and integrate sustainability promotion throughout the facility.

The agreement continues Sacramento’s focus on sustainability at its new facility. During planning, the Kings committed to becoming the first California building project to earn LEED Gold certification. The selection of the arena site was predicated on reducing transportation mileage for fans to reduce the air-quality impact of hosting NBA games, and the venue has committed to sourcing 90 percent of ingredients for its concessions locally.“SPI is a global company with local ties, and we’re proud to work with like-minded partners that understand the importance of environmental stewardship,” Kings president Chris Granger said about the partnership with SPI Solar. “Leveraging Sacramento’s weather will increase the ESC’s energy independence and serve as a model throughout the region and sports industry.
