The Green Sports Alliance teamed up with the Portland Trail Blazers to host the Second Annual Rip City Eco Summit on March 24, 2015. The sustainability/community-focused event coincided with the NBA’s Green Week and the Trail Blazers’ Green Game vs. the Golden State Warriors. This year’s event took place in the newly renovated Kuni Lexus Club Level at the Moda Center, an ideal setting to showcase the Blazers’ commitment to better practices in sustainable arena operations.Eco Summit attendees had the opportunity to visit several sponsor tables, representing the wide array of vendors and community organizations that are committed to providing environmentally sound and socially responsible solutions for the sports industry and beyond. Two panels of community and business leaders along with industry trailblazers discussed the role and importance of environmental, social, and economic responsibility within sports and entertainment:Panel #1 Green Sports Alliance - Models for Activating Fans Around Sustainability:

  • Green Sports Alliance
  • Bonneville Environmental Foundation
  • Council for Responsible Sport & University of Oregon Office of Sustainability
  • Vulcan Productions

Panel #2: Portland Trail Blazers - Community Partnership in Sustainability:

  • Portland Trail Blazers
  • Urban Gleaners
  • Friends of Trees
  • Rose Quarter

The panelists highlighted campaigns and partnerships that have used innovative tactics to activate sports fans around environmental and humanitarian issues and encourage them to take action. Here are a few tips from these engagement experts:

  • Partner with organizations that know their audience very well and know best how to activate them
  • Ensure the activation is equally valuable to all partners
  • Create activations that truly engage the audience: create a memorable experience
  • Your best stories are those that are told by others: when partners tell each other’s stories and advocate for one another, it is much more impactful to the audience
