English Premier League football club Manchester City has detailed plans to introduce 100% recyclable and zero-plastic beer cups at the Etihad Stadium this season, with an ‘edible coffee cup’ to also be trialled. The move forms part of the club’s commitment to eliminate all single-use plastics from catering operations and improve its carbon impact. An aqueous paper beer cup will be made available to fans starting with the home match against Norwich City on Saturday. The cups are 100% plastic-free and manufactured from sustainably-sourced paper and card, all of which is recyclable. The cups will be collected throughout the stadium in the same manner as previous cups via collection points and waste stackers, before exiting via the club’s mixed recycling waste stream to be 100% recycled. The edible coffee cup will be trialled alongside City’s full barista service of hot drinks outside the stadium in City Square and opposite the west entrance. Fans will have the option to put these cups into the club’s composting waste stream if they prefer not to eat them.City is also offering half-price food and drink inside the stadium between 1pm and 2pm to mark the return of fans. Items from seven local food operators and four local craft brewers will be available, with the new offerings designed to provide an increased choice for fans attending fixtures, while also supporting local businesses. The independent breweries whose products will be sold are Beatnikz Republic, Seven Brothers, Track Brewing Co and Runaway Brewery. The local food operators will be H M Pasties, Northern Soul, Triple B & Eat New York, Oh So British Kitchen, The Hip Hop Chip Shop, Panchos Burritos and Southmannyflavaz.Additionally, a new range of vegan food will be available, with items such as chilli nachos, pizza and loaded fries to be added to the menu.
