Major League Baseball and NRDC Partner Again at 2013 All-Star Game

While the American League defeated the National League 3-0 in this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Citi Field in New York this week, the league and the Natural Resources Defense Council partnered for the sixth straight year to incorporate sustainable practices into the hosting of the event. In continuing their promotion of green operations at one of baseball’s flagship events, MLB reduced the environmental impacts of hosting the game as well as educating fans on the importance of taking these practices beyond the stadium.The comprehensive sustainability plan for the All-Star Game included:

• The purchase of Green-E certified renewable energy credits to offset the use of more than 285,000 kWh of energy
• The purchase of water restoration credits from Bonneville Environmental Foundation to offset more than 700,000 gallons of water used at the event, along with the mitigating impacts of the low-flow fixtures already installed at Citi Field
• The widespread placement of recycling containers along with an NRDC-coordinated volunteer Green Team to promote recycling in the stands
• The use of recycled fibers and other materials in the ballots, media guides, other promotional documents and the red carpet used at the All-Star Red Carpet Show
• The coordination between the stadium operators and concessionaire to compost nearly one ton of food wastes and diverting other unused prepared foods to those in need via the Rock and Wrap it Up! program
