In 2013, the Los Angeles Galaxy launched “Recycle Goal,” a program challenging Southern California soccer players and supporters to clean up litter in their communities. Local youth teams ages 9 through 14 were invited to participate by collecting recyclables in their community and competing to win tickets to Galaxy games and a soccer clinic with the Galaxy. The program engaged 13 youth soccer teams and the top two teams alone collected more than 4,500 pounds of recyclable material. Gordon Kljestan, Manager of Amateur Soccer and Fan Development for the LA Galaxy, notes, “Recycle Goal was a great way for us to give back to our communities and encourage young soccer players to recycle. The kids learned about recycling, got involved in their cities, and enjoyed watching a game. The program was a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to doing it again next year.”
