Green Sports Alliance & USGBC Team with San Jose Earthquakes, 360 Architecture & Veggielution Community Farm to host Day of Service at Aptitud Community Academy

The Green Sports Alliance &U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Center for Green Schools teamed up to host a Green Sports Green Apple Day of Service Sunday for the launch of the 2014 Green Sports Alliance Summit. Volunteers and staff from USGBC, the Green Sports Alliance, the San Jose Earthquakes and 360 Architecture joined the Aptitud Community Academy and Veggielution Community Farm in San Jose for a morning working in the school and community garden.The Aptitud Community Academy school garden, supported by Veggielution Community Farm, serves to help integrate food and healthy living into the lives of the students and families living in San Jose. Over 50 volunteers spent the morning building and replanting reused concrete beds in front of the garden, building raised planter boxes, planting fruit trees and sheet mulching areas of the garden.San Jose Earthquakes Defender Ty Harden and mascot Q even stopped by do some gardening and action with the kids.

Now in its third year, the Green Apple Day of Service, gives parents, teachers, students, companies, sports teams and local organizations the opportunity to transform all schools into healthy, safe and productive learning environments. The annual Green Apple Day of Service will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2014, but volunteers are encouraged to initiate local service projects throughout the year. From planting and growing gardens and cleaning up schoolyards to coordinating recycling programs, there are a variety of ways to get involved.The 2014 Green Sports Alliance Summit kicks off today at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
