EPA’s 2012-2013 College and University Green Power Challenge Features Alliance Members

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently revealed the results of its seventh annual College and University Green Power Challenge, in which schools and conferences across the country compete to see which can utilize the highest amounts of sustainable energy in powering their campuses. This year, two Green Sports Alliance members -- the Ohio State University and the University of Pennsylvania -- finished among the top three universities in the 2012-13 Challenge.Penn topped the list of all competing schools, utilizing over 200 million kilowatt-hours of green power to meet nearly half of the campus’ energy needs. Ohio State led the Big Ten, finishing third behind the University of Oklahoma with 141 million kWh of green energy use; this number correlates to a quarter of the total energy use on the Columbus campus.The University of Washington, another Alliance member, finished second behind the University of Utah in the Pac-12 standings, with just under 15 million kWh of green energy meeting five percent of the university’s total energy needs. In total, the 76 colleges and universities competing in the Green Power Challenge used nearly 2.2 billion kWh of green energy to power their campuses during the 2012-13 academic year.Read the full article here.
