EPA Commends Cardinals Efforts to Reduce Food Waste

The St. Louis Cardinals were commended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency before their home game at Busch Stadium against the Cincinnati Reds for their efforts toward diverting food wastes from landfills. In the pre-game ceremony, EPA Region 7 administrator Karl Brooks offered high praise: “If every Major League Baseball club did what the Cardinals did, we would save hundreds of thousands of tons of food waste at every stadium across the country.”Since 2008, when the Cardinals first started to track and work toward reducing waste, they have kept 2000 tons of food out of local landfills. This has accounted for an 85% reduction in food waste over the five-year period, part of a comprehensive waste management program that also includes plastic and aluminum recycling throughout the stadium.“We’re looking to expand in the future to the concession areas and onto the concourses eventually. Eventually we’d like to expand it to the stadium all throughout,” said Hosei Maruyama of the Cardinals stadium operations staff. “We just think it’s the right thing to do.”Read the full article here.
