CHRISTINA WEISS LURIE, PRESIDENT OF EAGLES YOUTH PARTNERSHIP, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND AN OWNER OF THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES,  NAMED RECIPIENT OF 2013 GREEN SPORTS ALLIANCE ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

Award To Be Presented At Green Sports Gala On Aug. 27, 2013

July 25, 2013 (NEW YORK CITY) — The Green Sports Alliance will present Christina Weiss Lurie, an owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, its Environmental Leadership Award at the organization’s Green Sports Gala on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 in Brooklyn, New York. The Green Sports Gala will take place in conjunction with the 2013 Green Sports Alliance Summit. This year’s award is the Firefly Macchia, a Studio Edition by renowned artist Dale Chihuly. The Green Sports Alliance Environmental Leadership Award is presented annually to a member of the sports industry who has demonstrated leadership and has provided significant contributions to environmental sustainability.

The award is voted on by the Green Sports Alliance Board of Directors, which is comprised of representatives from professional sports organizations and environmental leaders. Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig received the first award in 2012. “It’s an honor to be named as the recipient of the Environmental Leadership Award,” said Christina Weiss Lurie. “When you look at the teams who comprise the Green Sports Alliance, you see a commitment to enhancing our environmental performance through a variety of different strategies. I’ve always believed that the path to sustainability is a journey, not a destination. We’re proud to be a part of such a dynamic collection of organizations who share that same goal and I am humbled to be selected as the recipient of this award.”

Weiss Lurie is a strong advocate of social and environmental causes, interweaving many philanthropic endeavors into the fabric of the Eagles’ brand. In particular, the Eagles’ Go Green initiative, founded in 2003, has worked to better the environment by creating and sustaining programs that improve the quality of life in the Philadelphia region, protect the environment and reduce the team’s impact on the planet. “Christina was the driving force behind the Eagles’ Go Green initiative, which was the first comprehensive sustainability effort by a professional sports team,” said Scott Jenkins, Board Chair of the Green Sports Alliance and Vice President of Ballpark Operations of the Seattle Mariners.

“The Eagles have shown tremendous leadership over the past ten years and continue to provide a great example for professional sports teams to follow.” Weiss Lurie will accept the Environmental Leadership Award at the Green Sports Gala on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 at The Liberty Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York. She will also speak at the Green Sports Alliance Summit at 9:30 a.m. that morning at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, joining a panel of professional team owners for a dialogue on the topic, “Investing in the Future: Supporting sustainability from top to bottom.” Find out more about the 2013 Green Sports Alliance Summit at www.greensportssummit.org.
