Arizona State Sun Devils Score LEED Gold for Fitness Facility
The 61,000 square-foot Polytechnic Campus Sun Devil Fitness Complex marks the 23rd ASU building to earn LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and the 39th ASU building to be LEED certified.
The ASU fitness facility was designed and constructed in direct response to student demand, and student committees helped program the complex. With onsite solar panels, a solar pool heater and optimized energy performance, the recreation facility earned top marks on its LEED scorecard. One of the hallmark design features of the facility is its passive cooling; the facility was designed to funnel air through a breezeway near the building’s core, this removes heat and provides shade.
“This significant project has allowed ASU to provide a state-of-the-art fitness environment for our students, and to embrace sustainable design and technologies – especially in energy conservation,” said Bruce Jensen, interim associate vice president, ASU Facilities Development and Management.
