2013 Green Sports Alliance Summit Kicks off Today in NYC with the Release of Collegiate Game Changers Report

The 3rd Annual Green Sports Alliance Summit kicks off today in New York City. Over 550 attendees and representatives from over 70 professional and collegiate sports organizations have joined us to share and learn about successes and innovations in sports greening. We're excited to get underway with a full docket of workshops, industry roundtables, keynotes, plenary panels, tours and networking.

Building on last year’s event, the 2013 Summit is once again an unprecedented gathering—uniting leaders from across the sports and sustainability industries as they work to create and implement innovative solutions to help green the sports industry. In addition to an informative and exciting conference program, the Summit features several special events and releases, like those highlighted below, that illustrate and celebrate the success of the sports greening movement.

Collegiate Game Changers: How Campus Sport is Going Green

‍Collegiate Game Changers, produced by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in collaboration with the Green Sports Alliance and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, documents for the first time the breadth of sustainability measures underway at collegiate sports departments all across the country.  It features 10 case studies of college sports programs employing more sustainable techniques to manage their energy, water, waste and purchasing. The findings provide a roadmap for sports departments, students and staff interested in adopting sustainability strategies.  And the report documents the bottom-line benefits of greening and the role of sports in transforming sustainability measures on college campuses. It is a follow-up to NRDC’s influential 2012 report, Game Changer, which featured the leaders in professional sports greening.“Let’s face it. America is a nation of sports fanatics, and for all of us who eat, sleep, and breathe sports, environmental stewardship should be a top priority,” said Missy Franklin, four-time Olympic gold medalist and student athlete at the University of California at Berkley, who authored the report’s afterword. “As this report shows, collegiate sports programs are recognizing this and taking control of their own sustainability.”The first hard copies of Collegiate Game Changers will be handed out at the 2013 Green Sports Alliance Summit

The Alliance teemed up the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), NRDC to update this unique guide for sports venues considering solar energy installations on or adjacent to their facilities. The guide, which will be highlighted at the Summit, provides guidance about the process of installing onsite solar technology, including physical requirements, costs, available funding, incentives, and proposals..
