Indians Team with Cleveland State University on Wind Turbine Project

Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians, will soon serve as the test site for a new wind turbine design designed by a Cleveland State University professor. In a partnership announced October 11, the Indians and CSU will soon install a prototype 18-foot vertical helix turbine on the southeast corner of the stadium overlooking East Ninth Street and Carnegie Avenue.

The 10-ton turbine, the most recent version of CSU Department of Engineering Technology Chairman Majid Rashidi’s alternative wind-energy designs, is engineered to fit into tight urban areas and harness wind energy from multiple directions and even at low speeds. Progressive Field will give Rashidi a highly visible location to test the design and serve as an advertisement for alternative energy sources.

The partnership with the Indians also allows for the franchise to contribute further to the Cleveland community. "We want to show that this experiment born here in Cleveland works in Cleveland," said Brad Mohr, the Indians’ Assistant Director of Ballpark Operations. "The goal is not just to have the turbine in the ballpark. It is to get them into urban areas where traditional wind power won't work."
