The University of California-Berkeley announced that it will host special zero-waste games for three sporting events at Haas Pavilion this season in collaboration with Cal Athletics, Campus Recycling and Refuse Services, and corporate sponsor Recology. The three contests are a prelude to the re-opening of California Memorial Stadium as a zero-waste facility in September 2012 after renovations are complete.
Starting with a volleyball game against Oregon State on November 18th, Haas Pavilion will then host a zero-waste women’s basketball game on December 17th against Ohio State, and another for a men’s basketball matchup with Arizona State on February 4th. On those three game days, fans will find recycling and compost containers instead of familiar trash receptacles, highlighting a wider campus commitment to be a leader in sustainable practices.
"We all must do our part to preserve our natural resources, and these early efforts are important first steps as we move toward a zero-waste goal at Memorial Stadium," Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour said. "Through awareness and practice, achieving our sustainability objectives will help protect our environment for all to enjoy."
